Patara Ruins & Beach – Ancient Capital and Turtle Paradise of the Turquoise Coast

Patara is one of the most fascinating historical and ecological sites in Turkey. Located near Gelemiş village, this former Lycian capital is home to stunning ruins, the longest beach in the country, and an active sea turtle conservation zone.

A City of Ancient Power

Patara was once the major naval and commercial port of Lycia, situated at the mouth of the Xanthos River. It flourished under both Lycian and Roman rule, later serving as a capital city and religious center, with a famed (but still undiscovered) Temple of Apollo that rivalled Delphi.

Excavations have revealed grand structures including:

  • The Lycian Parliament building (Bouleuterion), used by elected officials

  • A monumental Roman theatre for over 6,000 spectators

  • The Arch of Modestus, Patara’s iconic entrance

  • The world’s oldest road sign, ordered by Emperor Claudius

  • Several Roman baths, temples, and acropolis areas

  • A lighthouse from Nero’s era, among the world’s oldest

Ongoing digs continue to uncover fascinating insights into Patara’s grandeur and daily life, many still buried beneath the sands.

Birthplace of Saint Nicholas

Patara is also the birthplace of Saint Nicholas (yes, Santa Claus), born here in 270 AD. He later became Bishop of nearby Myra and was renowned for his generosity — inspiring many modern Christmas traditions.

Patara Beach – Nature and Conservation

Stretching up to 18 kilometres, Patara Beach is Turkey’s longest sandy beach. It’s not only breathtaking but also protected — it's a nesting ground for loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta). Visitors are asked to avoid marked nesting zones and respect the beach’s conservation rules.

In May 2024, the beach recorded its highest-ever number of sea turtle nests (53), reflecting successful preservation efforts.
