The Turkish Bath, or Hamam, is one of the most unique and authentic parts of Turkish culture. If done at the start of your holiday, it’s believed to help deepen and extend your suntan, making it a perfect ritual to begin your Kalkan vacation.
Rooted in ancient Roman and Ottoman traditions, a Turkish bath involves a series of stages designed to purify and rejuvenate both body and mind. While many hamams across Turkey are gender-separated, Kalkan’s Turkish baths are open to all, allowing couples and families to enjoy the experience together.
A typical session takes place in a marble-lined steam room with heated bench seating and a central slab called the “Göbek Taşı.” Warm water flows from elegant basins called Kurna, which are used to rinse your body and prepare your skin.
The second step is the “Kese” scrub, where a trained attendant (a “Tellak” for men or “Natir” for women) gently exfoliates dead skin from your body. This deep cleansing allows new skin cells to shine and enhances circulation.
Next is the bubble wash — arguably the most relaxing part. You’ll be covered in soft, scented foam and massaged from head to toe. The feeling of the warm marble and soapy bubbles is both calming and refreshing.
After rinsing off, guests are wrapped in towels and allowed to rest on sunbeds or cooling benches. You’ll leave with clean, soft skin, relaxed muscles, and a calm mind — the perfect start to a peaceful holiday.
Swimwear is required; a two-piece for women is most practical.
Avoid direct sun exposure for 12 hours after your bath, as your skin will be sensitive.
Kalkan offers several hamam options; ask your accommodation or host for the most up-to-date recommendations.
